Cutting Through the Virtual Clutter

Once you’ve tackled the physical side of your technological helpers, there’s everything etc_rant29__01__630x420
that goes on inside of them. As a NYC professional organizer, I’m surprised how often
people still have unprotected wi-fi in their homes. In a city as densely populated as New
York, password-encoding your wi-fi is not optional – it’s a must! By password protecting
your wi-fi use, you:

• Protect your personal and financial information

• Maintain your internet speed (by preventing byte-drain through unwanted
sharing)

• Enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your wi-fi use is truly
private

When it comes to making the most of your personal electronic device, voice activation
is developing by leaps and bounds. Sure, most savvy New Yorkers have become pretty
quick with their thumbs. But here’s a secret from your NYC professional organizer: the
most savvy smartphone and tablet users are making increasing use of voice-activated apps.

Apple made this famous with Siri, the iPhone and iPad personal assistant who responds
to spoken questions and commands with spoken responses and digital actions. But, as some recent successful commercials attest, Apple no longer owns voice activation. There are a lot of great ways to use your digital personal assistant. Most, if not all of them:

• Save time

• Enhance personal safety

• Are fun

If you’re walking down the street and need to get an address or another piece of information, being able to speak in to your phone like a walkie-talkie rather than thumb your way to the information you need means that you can stay far more aware of your surroundings. That means you’re safer. And that’s a good thing. You can also keep walking, saving you time – a huge plus if you’re running late for an important meeting!

So, my last tip as a professional organizer in NYC is this: if you aren’t making use of  voice-activation yet, start practicing today. Once you’re on the other side of this particular digital divide, technology will feel like your friend a lot more often.
