Cell Phones

Children’s Clothing/Equipment

Coats

Each December, NY Cares conducts a coat drive to collect warm coats for those in need. Visit www.nycares.org for more information about the coat drive as well as their other events.

Compact Discs

Damaged CD's can be repaired which is better for the environment than recycling. Visit www.auraltech.com for more information.

Computers

Donate or recycle your old computer instead of putting it into storage. For a list of places that accept computers, visit www.sharetechnology.org.

Eyeglasses

Collected eyeglasses are cleaned, repaired and measured to determine the correction. In many cases, glasses collected by The Lions Clubs (www.lions.org), LensCrafters (www.lenscrafters.com) and Pearle Vision (www.pearlevision.com) are sent to other countries.

Home Furnishings & Clothing

The proceeds from the sale of donated home furnishings and clothing benefit individuals and families affected by substance abuse, HIV, AIDS and mental illness. Visit angelthriftshop.org to learn more about this organization and for pickup information.

Household Items

Unwanted household items can be donated to Goodwill Industries (www.goodwill.org) for sale in their retail and online stores and to The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org )for sale in their thrift stores.

Men’s Clothing

Donate suits to Career Gear whose goal is to help men find jobs. Visit www.careergear.com for details. Also, Housing Works Thrift Shops (www.housingworks.org) are in need of suits for their stores. Thrift shop sales support homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.

Rechargeable Batteries

To locate a convenient recycling drop off location for batteries used in cordless power tools, cell phones, cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, and digital cameras, visit www.rbrc.org.

Sneakers

Donate your old sneakers to Nike and they will be ground up for use in the production of sports surfacing products used for tennis courts and running tracks. For more information, visit www.nikereuseashoe.com.

Towels/Bedding

Donate old towels, sheets, quilts, bath mats, and throw rugs to the ASPCA. For more information, visit www.aspca.org.

Unwanted Mail

By limiting the amount of paper mail that you receive, you will not only reduce the cost to the environment but also save your own time.
To stop credit card offers: Call 1-888-5 OPT OUT (or 1-888-567-8688) to register with all credit agencies.
To stop catalogs: Call, fax, or write the Customer Service Department and request to be deleted from their list. The information on the mailing label will be needed for your request to be processed.
Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes: Contact Customer Service at 1-800-645-9242 to be deleted from their mailing list.
Val-Pak Coupons: Click Val-Pak Coupons and fill out the form to have your address removed from their mailing list.
To stop advertising mail: Register at www.ims-dm.com to have your name removed from the direct marketers' mailing lists which could reduce the amount of mail received by up to 75%.
