4 Tips to Organize and Protect Your Electronics When Traveling

When traveling for work or pleasure this summer, one of the most important steps you can take is organizing your electronics before you leave. As most electronic gadgets are expensive, you should take precautions to keep them safe so you can avoid unnecessary costs down the road. One of my favorite reminders to clients is to prepare now so that you don’t have to worry about problems later. These office organizing strategies will help keep your electronics organized while you travel:

Tip #1: Label everything. As we tend to take multiple devices with us, gather up all the cords and accessories then take the time to label each one so that you know what items belong together. You can then quickly grab and charge low batteries spending less time trying to find the right charger and more time on tasks you want or need to do. This will help with packing, as well, ensuring that all essential items make it into your suitcase.

Tip #2: Wind up cords. You don’t want to spend time untangling a mess of cords when you arrive at your destination. Save time from the start and wind up your cords before packing, making sure to secure them with a twist tie or one of these travel cord ties. When you aren’t using the chargers and cords during your trip, make sure to gather them and return them to their travel bag.

Tip #3: Pack wisely. Keep items separate. Use Ziplock style bags or small toiletry cases to organize items like extra batteries or headphones as well as cords and chargers, making sure to label the bags clearly. Pack your electronics securely in your suitcase or carry-on bag. Look for suitcases or travel bags that have extra padding locks. This will help to prevent theft during your travels. Bonus Tip: In all probability you will keep your electronics with you when traveling by plane. Pack them in an accessible spot in your carry-on so that they can be quickly retrieved as needed as you are going through airport security.

Tip #4: Don’t bring everything. It can be tempting to pack several items when it’s time to hit the road. You may want to pack your laptop, cell phone, tablet, ipod, and any other gadget that you use regularly. Take a few minutes to think about what you will use each item for, and if there’s a way to simplify and bring less. The less you have, the less you need to care for! For example, if you are taking your laptop on a business trip, you may not need to bring a tablet, too, since your phone and laptop are capable of the same functions as your tablet.

Save yourself the time and headache of sorting through a tangled mess of cords and worrying about whether your delicate screens are safe inside your suitcase. These tips will give you peace of mind and keep you organized so that you can enjoy your trip! For more office organizing strategies, reach out to your NYC Professional Office Organizer today.
