How to Rid Your Inbox of Unwanted Email

email spamWith an overflowing email inbox, have you taken the time to notice how many emails are actually of importance? Do a lot of the emails coming in look like spam? Or are you inundated with junk mail that just takes up space?

Here are some email organizing tips from the Professional Organizer in NYC to help you handle the spam and junk emails finding their way into your inbox.

Protect your email address. Many people hand out their email address to anyone who asks. They may use it to sign up for mailing lists, or ads for the local grocery store, or on any website that offers an opt-in. What you might not realize is that your email address is an important part of your identity and should be treated as such. If you want to cut down on spam and junk emails, your first step is to be more critical in how and who you share your email address with.

Don’t forget to unsubscribe. When you open your inbox and begin to process your email, your first step might be to go through the list and delete everything that isn’t important. Though that is a great first action to save you time, it doesn’t prevent those emails from showing up again. It’s important to take some time and actually unsubscribe from the emails you no longer want to receive. Any email from a mailing list includes an option to unsubscribe within the email, often at the very top or the very bottom of the message. Be ruthless and unsubscribe from any email that you truly aren’t reading. If you honestly aren’t spending time looking through the weekly grocery ads, then there isn’t any reason to stay on that list. If you find yourself putting newsletters from a website that you follow into a folder to read later but you never have the time to come back to them, save yourself the trouble and unsubscribe. Only remain on the mailing lists for information that you actually make the time to read.

Take a peek in your spam folder. We all know that if a spam message isn’t caught by your email service’s spam filter, you need to be sure not to click on any links and mark it spam so that your service will recognize it next time. That step is pretty easy. But it is often easy to mark something spam by mistake, and sometimes even the best of newsletters find their way into the spam folder. So take some time occasionally to peak into that spam folder and make sure that everything in there actually belongs.

These simple steps will help you cut down on spam, unwanted ads, promotional messages, and junk mail that you don’t have the time or the interest to read. If you have less of these types of emails coming into your inbox, you will have more time to focus on the emails you actually need to respond to. As a Professional Organizer in NYC, I urge you to apply these email organizing tips to increase your productivity and reduce the clutter in your inbox!
